The relationship of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in COL4A2 gene with risk and outcome of primary intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in the Chinese Han population remains unclear, which was investigated in this study. Primary ICH patients and non-stroke controls of Chinese Han ethnicity were enrolled. The genotypes of 8 tag-SNPs were determined using a custom-by-design 48-Plex SNPscan Kit. Poor 3-month outcome was defined as modified Rankin Scale score 4-6. Logistic regression was employed to examine association between COL4A2 variants and risk and poor outcome of primary ICH. 323 patients with primary ICH and 376 stroke-free controls were included. Compared to controls, the rs1049931 G and rs1049906 C alleles were associated with increased ICH risk (p = 0.027 and 0.033), and these two allele counts increased this risk after adjustments respectively (additive model: adjusted OR [aOR] 1.41, 95% CI 1.03-1.94, corrected p = 0.043; aOR 1.37, 95% CI 1.01-1.86, corrected p = 0.043). The rs1049931 AG/GG and rs1049906 CT/CC genotypes showed increased susceptibility to non-lobar hemorrhage (aOR 1.63, 95% CI 1.06-2.50, p = 0.025; aOR 1.63, 95% CI 1.07-2.47, p = 0.022). Haplotype analysis revealed an association between rs1049906-rs1049931 haplotype CG and ICH risk (OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.05-1.78, p = 0.021). Regarding clinical outcome, the rs3803230 C allele (dominant model: aOR 1.94, 95% CI 1.04-3.63, p = 0.037) and haplotype AC of rs7990214-rs3803230 (OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.13-3.46, p = 0.015) contributed to 3-month poor outcome. The COL4A2 polymorphisms are associated with an increased risk of primary ICH, mainly non-lobar hemorrhage, and with long-term poor outcome after ICH in Chinese Han population.

The evolution processes of complex systems carry key information in the systems' functional properties. Applying machine learning algorithms, we demonstrate that the historical formation process of various networked complex systems can be extracted, including protein-protein interaction, ecology, and social network systems. The recovered evolution process has demonstrations of immense scientific values, such as interpreting the evolution of protein-protein interaction network, facilitating structure prediction, and particularly revealing the key co-evolution features of network structures such as preferential attachment, community structure, local clustering, degree-degree correlation that could not be explained collectively by previous theories. Intriguingly, we discover that for large networks, if the performance of the machine learning model is slightly better than a random guess on the pairwise order of links, reliable restoration of the overall network formation process can be achieved. This suggests that evolution history restoration is generally highly feasible on empirical networks.

Significant advances in chemotherapy drugs have reduced mortality in patients with malignant tumors. However, chemotherapy-related cardiotoxicity increases the morbidity and mortality of patients, and has become the second leading cause of death after tumor recurrence, which has received more and more attention in recent years. Arrhythmia is one of the common types of chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity, and has become a new risk related to chemotherapy treatment, which seriously affects the therapeutic outcome in patients. Traditional Chinese medicine has experienced thousands of years of clinical practice in China, and has accumulated a wealth of medical theories and treatment formulas, which has unique advantages in the prevention and treatment of malignant diseases. Traditional Chinese medicine may reduce the arrhythmic toxicity caused by chemotherapy without affecting the anti-cancer effect. This paper mainly discussed the types and pathogenesis of secondary chemotherapeutic drug-induced arrhythmia (CDIA), and summarized the studies on Chinese medicine compounds, Chinese medicine Combination Formula and Chinese medicine injection that may be beneficial in intervention with secondary CDIA including atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmia and sinus bradycardia, in order to provide reference for clinical prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced arrhythmias.

The reaction regioselectivity of gem-difluoroalkenes is dependent on the intrinsic polarity. Thus, the reversal of the regiose-lectivity of the addition reaction of gem-difluoroalkenes remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we described an unprecedented reversal of regioselectivity of hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) to gem-difluoroalkenes triggered by Fe-H species for the formation of difluoroalkyl radicals. Hydrogenation of the in-situ generated radicals gave difluoromethylated products. Mechanism experiments and theoretical studies revealed that the kinetic effect of the irreversible HAT process resulted in the reversal of the regioselectivity of this scenario, leading to the formation of a less stable α-difluoroalkyl radical regioisomer. On basis of this new reaction of gem-difluoroalkene, the iron-promoted hydrohalogenation of gem-difluoroalkenes for the efficient synthesis of aliphatic chlorodifluoromethyl-, bromodifluoromethyl- and iododifluoromethyl-containing compounds was developed. Particularly, this novel hydrohalogenation of gem-difluoroalkenes provided an effect and large-scale access to various iododifluoromethylated compounds of high value for synthetic application.

Background/Aims: Plumbagin (PL) has been shown to effe ctively inhibit autophagy, suppressing invasion and migration of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. However, the specific mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of PL on tumor growth factor (TGF)-ß-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in HCC. Methods: Huh-7 cells were cultured, and in vivo models of EMT and HCC-associated lung metastasis were developed through tail vein and in situ injections of tumor cells. In vivo imaging and hematoxylin and eosin staining were used to evaluate HCC modeling and lung metastasis. After PL intervention, the expression levels of Snail, vimentin, E-cadherin, and N-cadherin in the liver were evaluated through immunohistochemistry and Western blot. An in vitro TGF-ß-induced cell EMT model was used to detect Snail, vimentin, E-cadherin, and N-cadherin mRNA levels through a polymerase chain reaction. Their protein levels were detected by immunofluorescence staining and Western blot. Results: In vivo experiments demonstrated that PL significantly reduced the expression of Snail, vimentin, and N-cadherin, while increasing the expression of E-cadherin at the protein levels, effectively inhibiting HCC and lung metastasis. In vitro experiments confirmed that PL up-regulated epithelial cell markers, down-regulated mesenchymal cell markers, and inhibited EMT levels in HCC cells. Conclusion: PL inhibits Snail expression, up-regulates E-cadherin expression, and down-regulates N-cadherin and vimentin expression, preventing EMT in HCC cells and reducing lung metastasis.

Ampicillin (AMP) and cefazolin (CZO) are commonly used ß-lactam antibiotics which are extensively globally produced. Additionally, AMP and CZO are known to have relatively high ecotoxicity. Notably, the mix of AMP and CZO creates a synergistic effect that is more harmful to the environment, and how exposure to AMP-CZO can induce synergism in algae remains virtually unknown. To yield comprehensive mechanistic insights into chemical toxicity, including dose-response relationships and variations in species sensitivity, the integration of multiple endpoints with de novo transcriptomics analyses were used in this study. We employed Selenastrum capricornutum to investigate its toxicological responses to AMP and CZO at various biological levels, with the aim of elucidating the underlying mechanisms. Our assessment of multiple endpoints revealed a significant growth inhibition in response to AMP at the relevant concentrations. This inhibition was associated with increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and perturbations in nitrogen metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and energy metabolism. Growth inhibition in the presence of CZO and the AMP-CZO combination was linked to reduced viability levels, elevated ROS production, decreased total soluble protein content, inhibited photosynthesis, and disruptions in the key signaling pathways related to starch and sucrose metabolism, ribosome function, amino acid biosynthesis, and the production of secondary metabolites. It was concluded from the physiological level that the synergistic effect of Chlorophyll a (Chla) and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity strengthened the growth inhibition of S. capricornutum in the AMP-CZO synergistic group. According to the results of transcriptomic analysis, the simultaneous down-regulation of LHCA4, LHCA1, LHCA5, and sodA destroyed the functions of the photosynthetic system and the antioxidant system, respectively. Such information is invaluable for environmental risk assessments. The results provided critical knowledge for a better understanding of the potential ecological impacts of these antibiotics on non-target organisms.

We report the discovery and biosynthesis of new piperazine alkaloids-arizonamides, and their derived compounds-arizolidines, featuring heterobicyclic and spirocyclic isoquinolone skeletons, respectively. Their biosynthetic pathway involves two crucial non-heme iron enzymes, ParF and ParG, for core skeleton construction. ParF has a dual function facilitating 2,3-alkene formation of helvamide, as a substrate for ParG, and oxidative cleavage of piperazine. Notably, ParG exhibits catalytic versatility in multiple oxidative reactions, including cyclization and ring reconstruction. A key amino acid residue Phe67 was characterized to control the formation of the constrained arizonamide B backbone by ParG.

An unusual pyridine-containing sesterterpenoid, leucosceptrodine (1), and five new nor-leucosceptrane sesterterpenoids, including bisnor- (C23, 2), tetranor- (C21, 3) and pentanor- (C20, 4-6) skeletons, were isolated from the leaves of Tibetan Leucosceptrum canum. Their structures including their absolute configurations were determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses and quantum chemical calculations. A single crystal of one epimer (5) was crystallized from a pair of inseparable epimers, and its structure including its absolute configuration was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The immunosuppressive activities of compounds 1-4 with different potencies were evaluated by inhibiting the secretion of cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 in LPS-induced RAW264.7 macrophages.

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) commonly occur during abdominal-pelvic cancer radiation therapy; however, no effective prophylactic or therapeutic agents are available to manage RIII currently. This study aimed to clarify the potential of probiotic consortium supplementation in alleviating RIII. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Male C57BL/6J mice were orally administered a probiotic mixture comprising Bifidobacterium longum BL21, Lactobacillus paracasei LC86, and Lactobacillus plantarum Lp90 for 30 days before exposure to 13 Gy of whole abdominal irradiation. The survival rates, clinical scores, and histologic changes in the intestines of mice were assessed. The impacts of probiotic consortium treatment on intestinal stem cell proliferation, differentiation, and epithelial barrier function; oxidative stress; and inflammatory cytokines were evaluated. A comprehensive examination of the gut microbiota composition was conducted through 16S rRNA sequencing, while changes in metabolites were identified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. RESULTS: The probiotic consortium alleviated RIII, as reflected by increased survival rates, improved clinical scores, and mitigated mucosal injury. The probiotic consortium treatment exhibited enhanced therapeutic effects at the histologic level compared with individual probiotic strains, although there was no corresponding improvement in survival rates and colon length. Moreover, the probiotic consortium stimulated intestinal stem cell proliferation and differentiation, enhanced the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier, and regulated redox imbalance and inflammatory responses in irradiated mice. Notably, the treatment induced a restructuring of the gut microbiota composition, particularly enriching short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria. Metabolomic analysis revealed distinctive metabolic changes associated with the probiotic consortium, including elevated levels of anti-inflammatory and antiradiation metabolites. CONCLUSIONS: The probiotic consortium attenuated RIII by modulating the gut microbiota and metabolites, improving inflammatory symptoms, and regulating oxidative stress. These findings provide new insights into the maintenance of intestinal health with probiotic consortium supplementation and will facilitate the development of probiotic-based therapeutic strategies for RIII in clinical practice.

Photon blockade (PB) is an important quantum phenomenon in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). Here, we investigate the PB effect in the simplest cavity QED systems (one cavity containing first a single atom and then two atoms), where only the atoms are weakly driven. Via the analytical calculation and numerical simulation, we show that the strong PB can be generated even with the weak-coupling regime at the total resonance. This blockade is ascribed to the two-photon absorption, which is fundamentally different from the conventional and unconventional blockade mechanisms. Therefore, our study provides an alternative approach to produce the PB in the atom-driven cavity QED system.

Heart failure is a continuously developing syndrome of cardiac insufficiency caused by diseases, which becomes a major disease endangering human health as well as one of the main causes of death in patients with cardiovascular diseases. The occurrence of heart failure is related to hemodynamic abnormalities, neuroendocrine hormones, myocardial damage, myocardial remodeling etc, lead to the clinical manifestations including dyspnea, fatigue and fluid retention with complex pathophysiological mechanisms. Currently available drugs such as cardiac glycoside, diuretic, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, vasodilator and ß receptor blocker etc are widely used for the treatment of heart failure. In particular, natural products and related active ingredients have the characteristics of mild efficacy, low toxicity, multi-target comprehensive efficacy, and have obvious advantages in restoring cardiac function, reducing energy disorder and improving quality of life. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent advance including mechanisms and active ingredients of natural products for the treatment of heart failure, which will provide the inspiration for the development of more potent clinical drugs against heart failure.

This study examines the global air travel demand pattern using complex network analysis. Using the data for the top 50 airports based on passenger volume rankings, we investigate the relationship between network measures of nodes (airports) in the global flight network and their passenger volume. The analysis explores the network measures at various spatial scales, from individual airports to metropolitan areas and countries. Different attributes, such as flight route length and the number of airlines, are considered in the analysis. Certain attributes are found to be more relevant than others, and specific network measure models are found to better capture the dynamics of global air travel demand than others. Among the models, PageRank is found to be the most correlated with total passenger volume. Moreover, distance-based measures perform worse than the ones emphasising the number of airlines, particularly those counting the number of airlines operating a route, including codeshare. Using the PageRank score weighted by the number of airlines, we find that airports in Asian cities tend to have more traffic than expected, while European and North American airports have the potential to attract more passenger volume given their connectivity pattern. Additionally, we combine the network measures with socio-economic variables such as population and GDP to show that the network measures could greatly augment the traditional approaches to modelling and predicting air travel demand. We'll also briefly discuss the implications of the findings in this study for airport planning and airline industry strategy.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of positional care combined with doula delivery during childbirth in the correction of abnormal fetal position. METHODS: In this retrospective study, a total 108 pregnant women with abnormal fetal orientation were included from February 2018 to February 2021 in the Jinan City People's Hospital. Among them, 54 patients who received positional care combined with doula delivery were included in the intervention group (IG), while the other 54 patients who received routine nursing were included in the control group (CG). The data of the fetal orientation correction, delivery method and the pain score of puerpera of two groups were collected. The length of delivery, delivery fear score, the degree of neonatal asphyxia and nursing satisfaction were observed as the secondary outcomes. RESULTS: Compared with the CG, puerpera in the IG had more occipital anterior position, less occipital transverse and posterior position, higher eutocia rate, lower pain and fear scores and shorter length of delivery; the Apgar score and nursing satisfaction were higher in the IG (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Positional care combined with doula delivery can effectively correct abnormal fetal orientation, improve the rate of eutocia, reduce puerpera's pain and fear, shorten the length of delivery, and improve the quality of neonatal outcome and patients' satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect and prognosis of transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation (TACE) combined with lenvatinib and cabozantinib in the treatment of advanced unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) and identify the predictors of prognosis related to cellular inflammation and body mass index (BMI). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report the efficacy and prognosis of TACE combined with lenvatinib and cabozantinib in patients with uHCC and propose the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) as predictors of response and survival outcomes in this context. METHODS: The clinicopathologic data of 217 patients with advanced uHCC who underwent TACE combined with systemic therapy (lenvatinib mesylate + cabozantinib) in the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Dazhou Central Hospital between October 2017 and February 2020 were collected retrospectively, and the relevant parameters were analysed and compared. RESULTS: Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that BMI, NLR, PLR and prothrombin time were independent factors for the objective response rate (ORR) of transformed therapy for uHCC (OR = 0.812 vs 1,290.68 vs 1.067 vs 0.626, 95 % CI: 0.719-0.897 vs 108.081-11,541.137 vs 1.037-1.099 vs 0.414-0.946, respectively, p < 0.05). The results showed that BMI, NLR and PLR had certain predictive values for the ORR in patients with liver cancer undergoing translational therapy (p < 0.05); the combined predictive effect of the three was the best, and the area under the curve (AUC) of BMI + NLR + PLR for predicting the ORR in patients with liver cancer undergoing translational therapy was 0.951 (95 % CI: 0.921, 0.964). A total of 181 patients experienced adverse reactions at different grades, including 104 cases at grade 1, 50 cases at grade 2, 22 cases at grade 3 and 5 cases at grade 4. There was a significant difference in overall survival (OS) between low- and high-NLR groups, low- and high-PLR groups and low- and high-BMI groups (χ2 = 9.644, 8.313 and 10.314, respectively, p < 0.05). There was a significant difference in progression-free survival (PFS) between the low- and high-NLR groups, the low- and high-PLR groups and the low- and high-BMI groups (χ2 = 8.965, 9.783 and 6.343, respectively, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation combined with lenvatinib and cabozantinib is safe and effective in the treatment of advanced uHCC, with controllable adverse reactions. High NLR and PLR and low BMI values before treatment were independent risk factors for the ORR. Body mass index, NLR and PLR predicted responses to triple switch therapy and survival outcomes in uHCC. Patients with pretreatment NLR ≥ 2.96 and PLR ≥ 184.41 had worse OS and PFS rates. Patients with pretreatment BMI ≥ 23 kg/m2 had improved OS and a reduced risk of death.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a prevalent pregnancy complication featuring impaired insulin sensitivity. MiR-155-5p is associated with various metabolic diseases. However, its specific role in GDM remains unclear. CCAAT enhancer binding protein beta (CEBPB), a critical role in regulating glucolipid metabolism, has been identified as a potential target of miR-155-5p. This study aims to investigate the impact of miR-155-5p and CEBPB on insulin sensitivity of trophoblasts in GDM. METHODS: Placental tissues were obtained from GDM and normal pregnant women; miR-155-5p expression was then evaluated by RT‒qPCR and CEBPB expression by western blot and immunohistochemical staining. To investigate the impact of miR-155-5p on insulin sensitivity and CEBPB expression, HTR-8/SVneo cells were transfected with either miR-155-5p mimic or inhibitor under basal and insulin-stimulated conditions. Cellular glucose uptake consumption was quantified using a glucose assay kit. Furthermore, the targeting relationship between miR-155-5p and CEBPB was validated using a dual luciferase reporter assay. RESULTS: Reduced miR-155-5p expression and elevated CEBPB expression were observed in GDM placentas and high glucose treated HTR8/SVneo cells. The overexpression of miR-155-5p significantly enhanced insulin signaling and glucose uptake in trophoblasts. Conversely, inhibiting miR-155-5p induced the opposite effects. Additionally, CEBPB was directly targeted and negatively regulated by miR-155-5p in HTR8/SVneo cells. Silencing CEBPB effectively restored the inhibitory effect of miR-155-5p downregulation on insulin sensitivity in trophoblasts. DISCUSSION: These findings suggest that miR-155-5p could enhance insulin sensitivity in trophoblasts by targeting CEBPB, highlighting the potential of miR-155-5p as a therapeutic target for improving the intrauterine hyperglycemic environment in GDM.

The emergence of photocatalysis has greatly advanced radical fluoroalkylation reactions. Central to this advancement is the introduction and refinement of radical reagents, which play a pivotal role in driving these reactions forward. Intriguingly, some of these reagents, previously not recognized for their radical properties, have emerged as key players in this area. In this Perspective, we provide an overview of four representative reagents pioneered by our laboratory, which have subsequently garnered extensive application in broader research contexts, including difluorocarbene precursors bromodifluoromethylphosphonium bromide, electrophilic sulfonylation reagent triflic anhydride, and nucleophilic trifluoromethylation reagent methyl fluorosulfonyldifluoroacetate (Chen's reagent). The integration of phosphonium reagents, triflic anhydride, and methyl fluorosulfonyldifluoroacetate into photocatalysis has enabled some unexpected reactivities and now notably expanded the capabilities in radical difluoromethylation, trifluoromethylation, and difluoroalkylation. Our discussion highlights how these atypical reagents have enriched the toolkit available for radical fluoroalkylations, offering insights that could inspire future research and application in this area.

The small intestine exhibits remarkable sensitivity to ionizing radiation (IR), which significantly hampers the effectiveness of radiotherapy in the treatment of abdominal and pelvic tumors. Unfortunately, no effective medications are available to treat radiation-induced intestinal damage (RIID). Fraxin (7-hydroxy-6-methoxycoumarin 8-glucoside), is a coumarin derivative extracted from the Chinese herb Cortex Fraxini. Several studies have underscored the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties of fraxin. However, the efficacy of fraxin at preventing or mitigating RIID remains unclear. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the protective effects of fraxin against RIID in vitro and in vivo and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The study findings revealed that fraxin markedly ameliorated intestinal injuries induced by 13 Gy whole abdominal irradiation (WAI), which was accompanied by a significant increase in the population of Lgr5+ intestinal stem cells (ISCs) and Ki67+ progeny. Furthermore, fraxin mitigated WAI-induced intestinal barrier damage, and reduced oxidative stress and intestinal inflammation in mice. Transcriptome sequencing of fraxin-treated mice revealed upregulation of IL-22, a pleiotropic cytokine involved in regulating the function of intestinal epithelial cells. Moreover, in both human intestinal epithelial cells and ex vivo cultured mouse intestinal organoids, fraxin effectively ameliorated IR-induced damage by promoting the expression of IL-22. The radioprotective effects of fraxin were partially negated in the presence of an IL-22-neutralizing antibody. In summary, fraxin is demonstrated to possess the ability to alleviate RIID and maintain intestinal homeostasis, suggesting that fraxin might serve as a strategy for mitigating accidental radiation exposure- or radiotherapy-induced RIID.

K2-capsular Klebsiella pneumoniae is a hypervirulent pathogen that causes fatal infections. Here, we describe a phage tailspike protein, named K2-2, that specifically depolymerizes the K2 capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of K. pneumoniae into tetrasaccharide repeating units. Nearly half of the products contained O-acetylation, which was thought crucial to the immunogenicity of CPS. The product-bound structures of this trimeric enzyme revealed intersubunit carbohydrate-binding grooves, each accommodating three tetrasaccharide units of K2 CPS. The catalytic residues and the key interactions responsible for K2 CPS recognition were identified and verified by site-directed mutagenesis. Further biophysical and functional characterization, along with the structure of a tetrameric form of K2-2, demonstrated that the formation of intersubunit catalytic center does not require trimerization, which could be nearly completely disrupted by a single-residue mutation in the C-terminal domain. Our findings regarding the assembly and catalysis of K2-2 provide cues for the development of glycoconjugate vaccines against K. pneumoniae infection. IMPORTANCE: Generating fragments of capsular polysaccharides from pathogenic bacteria with crucial antigenic determinants for vaccine development continues to pose challenges. The significance of the C-terminal region of phage tailspike protein (TSP) in relation to its folding and trimer formation remains largely unexplored. The polysaccharide depolymerase described here demonstrates the ability to depolymerize the K2 CPS of K. pneumoniae into tetrasaccharide fragments while retaining the vital O-acetylation modification crucial for immunogenicity. By carefully characterizing the enzyme, elucidating its three-dimensional structures, conducting site-directed mutagenesis, and assessing the antimicrobial efficacy of the mutant enzymes against K2 K. pneumoniae, we offer valuable insights into the mechanism by which this enzyme recognizes and depolymerizes the K2 CPS. Our findings, particularly the discovery that trimer formation is not required for depolymerizing activity, challenge the current understanding of trimer-dependent TSP activity and highlight the catalytic mechanism of the TSP with an intersubunit catalytic center.

BACKGROUND: The burden of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and syphilis coinfections remains disproportionately high among people living with HIV/AIDS. Hubei province is located in central China, where there are distinct regional characteristics of the distribution of people living with HIV/AIDS acquired via diverse transmission routes and the AIDS epidemic itself. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to estimate the magnitude of HBV, HCV, or syphilis coinfections among people living with HIV/AIDS with blood-borne transmission, which includes former paid blood donors, contaminated blood recipients, and intravenous drug users, as well as among people with sex-borne HIV transmission (including heterosexual people and men who have sex with men) and people with mother-to-child HIV transmission. METHODS: From January 2010 to December 2020, people living with HIV/AIDS were tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), HCV antibodies, and syphilis-specific antibodies. The positive patients were further tested for HBV markers, HBV DNA, and HCV RNA, and received a rapid plasma reagin circle card test. All people living with HIV/AIDS were first divided into transmission groups (blood, sex, and mother-to-child); then, people with blood-borne HIV transmission were divided into former paid blood donors, contaminated blood recipients, and intravenous drug users, while people with sex-borne HIV transmission were divided into heterosexual people and men who have sex with men. RESULTS: Among 6623 people living with HIV/AIDS, rates of chronic HCV infection were 80.3% (590/735) in former paid blood donors, 73.3% (247/337) in intravenous drug users, 57.1% (444/777) in contaminated blood recipients, 19.4% (21/108) in people with mother-to-child HIV transmission, 8.1% (240/2975) in heterosexual people, and 1.2% (21/1691) in men who have sex with men. Chronic HBV infection rates were similar among all people with blood-borne HIV transmission. However, compared to heterosexual people, the chronic HBV infection rate was greater in men who have sex with men (213/1691, 12.6% vs 308/2975, 10.4%; χ21=5.469; P=.02), although HBV exposure was less common (827/1691, 48.9% vs 1662/2975, 55.9%; χ21=20.982; P<.001). Interestingly, the combination of HBsAg and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) was found in 11 patients with sex-borne HIV transmission, but in 0 people with blood-borne HIV transmission (11/196, 5.6% vs 0/521, 0%; χ21=29.695, P<.001). In people with sex-borne HIV transmission, the proportions of patients with a syphilis titer ≥1:16 and neurosyphilis were 8.6% (105/1227) and 7.8% (37/473), respectively, whereas these values were 0 in people with blood-borne HIV transmission. CONCLUSIONS: In people living with HIV/AIDS, HCV transmission intensity was significantly associated with specific exposure modes of blood or sexual contact. The rate of chronic HBV infection among men who have sex with men was higher than in any other population. Attention should be paid to the high prevalence of neurosyphilis in people living with HIV/AIDS who contract HIV by sexual intercourse.
